Best Changing Tables

Quick Summary

The best changing table is the Delta Children Wilmington Changing Table, according to parent reviews and testers in the What to Expect Community. When choosing a changing table, parents look for ones that are made of sturdy materials, offer plenty of storage space and are easy to put together.

Ah, the diaper changing station. First, it’s the nonstop blowouts, followed by the feels-like-I’m-wrestling-an-alligator phase. These days, my 22-month-old rarely lies still for me anymore, as he’d rather be rummaging through his toy box. But the best changing tables make this (sometimes) chaotic experience a little more manageable and a lot more convenient. It also doesn’t hurt that it helps pull our nursery together.

In my home, you'll find the Babyletto Yuzu Dresser to match our 8-in-1 Babyletto Yuzu crib. But I also have firsthand experience with Amazon’s best-selling Delta Children Wilmington Changing Table and the Carter’s by DaVinci Colby Changing Table, two standalone options I use at my parents’ and grandma’s houses, respectively. Because after one too many “makeshift station” blowout disasters, we decided to add permanent fixtures at the spots we frequent the most.

While some parents consider changing tables “optional,” I honestly can’t imagine life without mine (and I'm talking about all three!). These pieces provide a safe, comfortable place to change my baby, while keeping diapering essentials and extra outfits all within arm’s reach.

How I Chose the Best Changing Tables

For my own personal shopping journey, I considered about two dozen of the best-selling changing tables at a range of price points, from portable stations to luxury dressers that can pull double-duty as long-term bedroom furniture.

But because what suits my taste may not suit yours, I made sure to identify additional options that balanced safety, functionality, and design, while also meeting industry testing and certification standards. While I personally liked the idea of removing a changing table topper and using a dresser throughout childhood, many of my mom friends went the classic route.

Here’s how I put together the list below:

  • Hands-on testing: As a mom and parenting writer, I've used several changing tables firsthand, including the Babyletto Yuzu Dresser with Changing Tray, Delta Children Wilmington Changing Table, and Carter’s by DaVinci Colby Changing Table, across multiple home setups (ours, my parents’, and my grandma’s).
  • Expert input: I referenced recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and pediatricians like Howard Reinstein, M.D., a pediatrician with a private practice in Encino, California, who emphasizes that guardrails and safety straps are essential, but you should always keep one hand on your baby.
  • Community feedback: I sourced opinions from What to Expect community members to learn which tables parents loved most and why — from easy-to-clean designs to smart storage solutions. Each of the changing tables on this list has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from the What to Expect community members for this criteria.
  • Safety certifications: You’ll notice that the majority of my picks are GreenGuard Gold-certified for meeting indoor air quality standards, and meet or exceed industry safety standards from ASTM International, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and Baby Safety Alliance (previously known as Juvenile Products Manufacturer Association or JPMA for safety and performance testing.

Why We Love It

The Delta Children changing table is a durable choice that many parents say is a great value for the price. Made with sustainable poplar and New Zealand pine, this changing table is built to last and hold up to frequent use. Many parents say even after months of using it daily, they didn’t notice any wobbling. With two 10-inch shelves, you can hold diapering essentials within arm’s reach but out of baby’s grasp while you’re changing her. Parents also love that assembly was a breeze, with one parent noting they put it together in under 15 minutes. Even though this table doesn’t double as a dresser, its simple design and generous storage space means that you can use it as a shelving unit in the future.

Pros
  • Folds flat
  • Includes storage bin
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Has low weight limit

Material: Steel frame, PVC, canvas

Weight: 11 pounds

Dimensions: 31.5 x 25 x 40.5 inches

Weight limit: 24 pounds

Why We Love It

Whether you want a second changing area in another room in your home or a safe spot for changes at the grandparents’ home, this space-saving and portable folding diaper station is an ideal solution. The full-size changing table folds down flat, so you can store it in a closet or behind a door when not in use. (Just be sure to take everything off the lower shelf first.) Many parents also say it’s the perfect height to not strain your back during changes, and it’s an excellent option for taller parents in particular because it’s taller than many tables. Note that it has a weight limit of 24 pounds, though, so it may last as long as you’d like it to for larger babies.

Best Changing Table and Crib Combo

Storkcraft Portofino 5-in-1 Convertible Crib and Changer

Best Changing Tables - Storkcraft Crib and Changer
Pros
  • Versatile
  • Includes changing pad
  • Has ample storage
  • JPMA-certified
Cons
  • Difficult to assemble
  • Changing table is small

Material: Pine wood, engineered wood, wood composites

Weight: 125 pounds

Dimensions: 70.78 x 32.91 x 43.11 inches

Weight limit: Child must be under 50 pounds to use the bed

Why We Love It

Middle-of-the-night changes are rarely easy, but Storkcraft’s convertible crib and changer simplifies the process. Although the changing table area is small, many parents still found it very convenient to have it included with the bed so they didn’t have to buy a separate piece of furniture. Many reviewers comment on the impressive amount of storage available, with both drawers for items to keep out of baby’s reach and open shelves on the back.

As baby grows, the Storkcraft Portofino 5-in-1 Convertible Crib transforms into a toddler bed or daybed by removing rails and lowering the mattress, then eventually it can become a full-size bed. At that point, the changing table itself becomes a big-kid nightstand. Many parents love how this piece of furniture serves so many purposes, and numerous comment about how beautiful it looks in a nursery.

Note that several reviewers say the changing pad is very thin and that it was hard to find a separate pad that would fit the small dimensions.

Cons

Why We Love It

For an affordable price, you can purchase the Dream on Me Emily Changing Table in natural wood and still have money left to stock your diapering station. This changing table comes complete with 5-inch guardrail — which might give nervous parents more peace of mind than changing tables with shorter rails — and two large storage shelves. Overall, parents were wowed by how easy this product was to assemble, and said there was plenty of storage space in the shelves to hold diapering essentials. Note, however, that some reviewers said the bottom two shelves felt flimsy and didn’t feel like they could store anything heavy on them. Some parents also found the changing pad was a bit thin and swapped it for a thicker option.

Another space-saving solution recommended by parents? Combine your dresser and changing table. This system from Storkcraft is a two-for-one piece that conveniently comes with a removable changing tray. One parent shared that they use the table for every diaper change. Post-potty training, remove the tray and use it as a dresser throughout baby’s childhood.

One thing to keep in mind: Some parents did say assembly took significantly longer than expected.

  • “We really like this one. I got different knobs with baby animals to fit our nursery theme. We have this and another dresser and they are way better quality than what we have for ourselves lol. We use the changing table every time!”

Best Luxe Dresser for Changing Topper

Babyletto Yuzu 6-Drawer Dresser

Babyetto Yuzu 6-Drawer Dresser
Pros
  • Six large drawers
  • Can accommodate most changing trays
  • Available in a smaller version
Cons
  • Pricey

Material: New Zealand pine wood, engineered wood

Weight: 126 pounds

Dimensions: 48 x 19 x 34 inches

Weight limit: 50 pounds

Why We Love It

I purchased this dresser in tandem with Babyletto’s 8-in-1 Yuzu convertible bassinet and crib. From a style perspective, I appreciated matching legs of the two pieces, but they’re also some of the most functional nursery furniture items. The Yuzu dresser comes in two variations: a six-drawer dresser or a three-drawer changer dresser. I selected the latter, in the hopes that I could use the dresser after my son is out of diapers, and paired it with a changing tray I plan to remove later on. That said, the changer top that goes with the three-drawer option is removable, so it really comes down to how much drawer space you need.

My one gripe about Babyletto? These high-quality, grow-with-baby items are pricier than most on the market. But when you consider how long you’ll need them—and how they can adapt with your lifestyle over time—I’d say they’re well worth the investment.

To simplify setup, it comes with a fitted changing pad designed specifically for the table. For added peace of mind, the Teddi is also GreenGuard Gold and JPMA certified.

While it’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews, some users noted that the materials aren’t as high-end as those found in more expensive models.

Best Minimalist Changing Table

Carter’s by DaVinci Colby Changing Table

Best Minimalist Changing Table: Carter’s by DaVinci Colby Changing Table
Pros
  • Minimalist design
  • On-trend colorways
  • Good value
Cons
  • Some shared challenges with assembly

Material: New Zealand pine wood, engineered wood

Weight: 22 pounds

Dimensions: 33.5 x 17.75 x 34 inches

Weight limit: 30 pounds

Why We Love It

This is the changing table at my parents’ house, which matches the color of the Babyletto crib we purchased in Light Sage. The muted green furniture was the ultimate pairing with the nursery nook’s dinosaur wallpaper, and the minimalist design worked with the overall aesthetic of the space. Not to mention, it’s also GreenGuard Gold certified and tested to exceed CPSC safety standards.

We keep diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream on the top shelf, and for overnight stays and daytime naps, we place our Hatch Rest Go on the bottom shelf. Similar to other changing tables, it also conveniently comes with a coordinating changing pad.

What to Look For in a Changing Table

Even the best changing tables can vary widely in design and features. Before adding one to your nursery, keep these key factors in mind:

  • Safety: Choose a changing table with guardrails at least 2 inches high on all four sides. While most include straps, remember that these are not a substitute for keeping a hand on your baby.
  • Storage: To handle baby’s business quickly, you’ll want a changing table that allows you to keep diaper cream, diapers and wipes nearby, but out of baby's reach, per the AAP. It’s especially crucial that powders and disposable diapers are kept out of baby’s reach to avoid her inhaling powder or suffocating on torn off pieces of diaper. Free-standing changing tables typically have open shelving below while changing table dressers might have space on top or in the highest drawer for diapering necessities.
  • Weight capacity: Most changing tables safely hold babies up to 30 pounds. Once your little one starts rolling or resisting diaper time, it’s safer to switch to a changing pad or mat on the floor.
  • Versatility: Opt for a dresser or convertible design that transitions beyond the diaper years. Removable toppers or bars make it easy to repurpose the piece for clothing or toy storage later.
  • Certifications: When looking at kids’ furniture, there are two important certifications some parents want to consider. The first is the Juvenile Products Manufacturer Association (JPMA) Certification Seal, which means the product has gone through independent party testing where it is evaluated to have met its high standards for safety, performance and functionality. The second is GreenGuard Gold Certification, which tests furniture to make sure it meets indoor air quality standards and emits low amounts of volatile organic compound (VOCs) that can be irritating or even trigger allergic reactions. We prioritized changing tables that met one or both of these certifications.

FAQs

Although a changing table certainly isn't a requirement, it does make life easier when your little one is still in diapers. It provides you with a raised surface to rest baby on while changing her diaper, which helps prevent any backaches that could happen as you bend over. Plus, you can keep diapering supplies within arm’s reach so you can safely keep a hand on baby as you get what you need. The safety guardrails and straps may also give parents peace of mind, but remember, there’s always a fall risk while changing diapers on an elevated surface.

Parents in the What to Expect Community, however, rave about using a dresser and topping it with a changing pad instead of buying a separate piece of furniture. Dr. Reinstein says it’s popular among his patients as well. “A lot of parents now have these pads, and they can change the baby on the bed, on the floor, anywhere they go,” he says.

There are a few guidelines that both the AAP and Dr. Reinstein suggest when it comes to safely using your changing table. Here are the must-haves for parents planning out their next diaper change:

  • Find a changing table with a 2-inch guardrail (minimum) on all four sides. When using a changing pad, whether on a changing table or regular dresser, make sure the top of it is concave, so that the middle where baby lays is lower than the sides.
  • Keep a hand on baby at all times. “I think the main thing is you can’t — not even for a second — leave the child alone,” Dr. Reinstein says. One way to do this is to make sure your supplies are nearby, so you can grab a fresh wipe or new diaper while still keeping your hand on baby. Use a shelf of the changing table or the top drawer of your dresser for storing diapering essentials.
  • Use a buckle safety strap, if available. This is not guaranteed to keep baby secure — so you’ll still have to keep a hand on baby at all times, even if she is buckled — but it can help keep baby still while changing her diaper.

There are some changing tables with extra space to store diapers and wipes on the same level as the changing pad, or you can purchase an organizer to place on the lower shelves, drawers or cabinet space. The perk of having a changing table is that it allows you to safely grab diapering essentials while tending to your baby, so you’ll want to keep a backstock of those items. It’s also a good idea to keep a few clothing items, since you’ll never know when a blowout will strike.

The standard dimensions of a changing pad are about 32 inches long and 16 inches wide, so you’ll want to make sure those dimensions match up with your dresser or other furniture items. You can also choose your changing pad first, and then select the best dresser to go with it. For instance, the Keekaroo Peanut is among the most popular changing pads and measures 31 inches long and 17 inches wide.
