Quick Summary
The best baby sound machine is the Hatch Rest for its ease of use, versatility, and longevity (lasting into the pre-teen years), based on feedback from testers on the What to Expect staff and in the user community. It's also the winner of What to Expect's Sleep Awards.
I went back and forth about whether to add a baby sound machine to my registry. My mother was quick to point out it wasn’t necessary; that I slept just fine without one (35 years ago, mind you). But I also had friends who were new moms telling me it was the secret to getting more sleep — for their babies and themselves. After plenty of conversations and a lot more research, I figured it was better to have one than not. Two years later (with another little one the way), I can honestly say it was a worthwhile addition to my baby registry.
Learning about the many benefits of sound machines ultimately swayed my decision. To start, they’ve been found to help babies fall — and stay — asleep. In fact, one study found that white noise may even help babies fall asleep faster. “White noise machines can be extremely useful in assisting babies with falling as well as staying asleep,” says Miami-based pediatrician Gary Kramer, M.D., a pediatrician in private practice in Coral Gables, Florida.
Not to mention, gentle sounds can help baby transition from living inside a relatively noisy womb to a quiet nursery. This is especially helpful during the newborn phase when every bit of sleep matters not only for your baby, but also for you. As a new mom who is trying to recover from birth while adjusting to the new normal, you need all the rest you can (reasonably) get.
And don't just take it from me: What to Expect contributing writer Blake Bakkila told me her portable sound machine has been essential to creating a calm environment at home or away. After more than a dozen flights and numerous hotel stays with her toddler, she always makes sure to pack it in her bag.
Sure, you could easily rely on a phone or any device that plays white noise. Baby sound machines, however, often come with parent-friendly extras, like timers (and many double as a handy night light, too).
Keep reading to see what models parents (including myself and multiple What to Expect staff members) recommend the most.
How I Tested and Chose the Best Baby Sound Machines
At first glance, it might be hard to tell what makes one baby sound machine apart from another, especially with so many similar models on the market. To narrow things down, I:
Reviewed results from the What to Expect Sleep Awards survey, where nearly 1,000 parents voted on their favorite sound machine. I considered their favorites, looking at what they like best for their nursery and what sets it apart from others.
I also spoke to five parents on the What to Expect staff who have seven children total between them and have each tested several baby sound machines over the years (and most are still using the same one in the toddler years!)
I also consulted expert Dr. Kramer and referred to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Both advise ensuring the chosen sound machine does not exceed 50 decibels (which is about the same level as an air conditioner running) in baby’s nursery and roughly 7 feet away from the crib.
Based on all of the above, I prioritized machines that offered:
Consistent, loop-free playback
Adjustable volume
A variety of soothing sound options
Automatic timers and/or continuous play
Parent-friendly extras like portability and built-in night lights
By combining parent experiences with expert-backed safety guidelines, I'm confident my list of the best baby sound machines will help make life as a new parent a little easier.

Hatch Baby, the newest iteration of the award-winning Hatch Rest, is a favorite for parents who love a high-tech, incredibly customizable sleep sidekick. Despite its chic new look, the Hatch Baby still offers tons of soothing white noise options (think heartbeat, static, and gentle rain) as well as songs and lullabies. You can then combine your favorite sound with a specific light setting and save baby’s favorites for later.
“The ability to save sounds can be helpful for parents who want to create a different environment for night sleep versus napping,” says Leah Rocketto, Associate Commerce Director at What to Expect, who finds the feature to be easy and intuitive to use. Leah also loves the easy-to-use app: “It’s especially helpful if my mom or someone else is with the baby and struggling to turn it on. I can just do it from my phone, and all is well.”
Beyond the aesthetics, the Hatch Baby offers extra helping hands within the app. Features like 1:1 Sleep Consultant Chat and Baby Sleep Guides are there to walk you through those first-year sleep hurdles. You’ll get six months of free access to these pro tips, and if you love them, you can extend the subscription for $6.99 a month.
Sarah Darby, What to Expect's Senior SEO Strategist, also found creating custom combinations to be super useful, especially because it’s easy to accidentally cycle through all of the sounds when turning the machine on and off.
As baby gets older, you can also use the Hatch as an alarm clock and program specific colors to signal to your toddler that it’s time for bed, time to wake up, or time for a nap. Talk about longevity!
“...have been using the Hatch Rest 2nd gen with my 7 wk old. The main [functions] I use are the white noise and sleep stories. I use both of these things for sleep as an adult too (white noise machine to block out city noise and the calm app for sleep stories).”
“Our daughters both use a Hatch. My husband and I also use a Hatch. My parents and in-laws use a Hatch. Most adults I know use a sound machine of some sort. We love them!”
“I also love that I can set a light to come on for when it is wake up time to not come out of his room [too] early unless to pee or if he really needs mom or dad.”
Last year's winner of the Sleep Awards, the Yogasleep Hushh is still well-loved by parents for being an impressively useful little device that you can take with you just about anywhere, for a fraction of the cost. With three sound variations, including bright white noise, deep white noise, and gentle surf, plus full volume control, every type of setting can be pretty personalized. Parents also love how easy it is to use the Hushh with simple buttons on the side. The standout feature of the Hushh, however, is the included clip that allows you to attach it to your stroller on walks or your diaper bag. Its compact size means you can take it with you to travel or just around the house while holding baby. Even though it has less fancy customization, parents find that the Yogasleep Hushh is a reliable and effective white noise machine for babies.
Just remember: Never attach this device (or any other on this list) to your baby’s crib. Not only would that make the sound levels unsafe, but attaching anything to a crib is a hazard, per the AAP.
“We have been using the yogasleep hushh for almost 5 years and it is still going strong. We like that it is small, light and portable. It even comes with us when we travel.”
When bedtime feels more like a battle, a trusty sound machine can be a game-changer. The Dreamegg D1 offers 24 calming sounds — and seven of these alone are different kinds of white noise. Whenever you want to switch things up, however, you'll have the ability to toggle between natural sounds like a gentle rainfall or ocean waves, along with a few fan sounds, too. Needless to say, this machine is designed to help your little one drift off to dreamland.
It's also one of many sound machines on this list that doubles as a night light, offering a soft glow to make those late fees a little more cozy. Plus, parents love that this has the option to run it continuously (always on) or select one of the timers that will automatically shut this off once you know baby is sound asleep. Choose between 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Bonus: it'll remember your last used settings, so you don't have to struggle putting on your ideal background noise if the lights have already been shut off. And that goes for you or baby! This machine is just as soothing and comforting for grown-ups who need a little extra help winding down.
"We got this as a second machine to the hatch and it’s great for ocean sounds and all different colours of lights, including red. You can’t select a specific hue if that’s important but there’s basic colours to pick from and a lot of sounds, more than the hatch! No apps just push the buttons and it’s on."

The Dohm is described as a staple in many parents’ homes for several reasons. Instead of digitally recreating sound, it actually has a fan built in inside to produce white noise that many parents say sounds natural and unobtrusive. Plus, it can impressively drown out almost all outside noises — whether it’s coming from the street or other areas of your home — which may be one of the reasons many parents love it in their own rooms, too.
“The fact that it uses a fan and not a low-quality recording played through a low-quality speaker makes a difference I think,” says Jamison Hermann, What to Expect's former Senior Video Producer, who has two in his home.
Its straightforward design allows you to adjust the tone and volume by twisting the top and sides. Each opens or closes vents so you can modify the level depending on what helps baby sleep. Many parents in the What to Expect community say it has even lasted them for several years. One thing to note, however, is that it doesn’t have a timer, so you’ll have to manually turn it off if you don’t want it to play all night. It also doesn’t have a light.
Power source: Battery-operated (Requires two AA batteries, not included)
Sound options: 1
Light: No

This one is slightly controversial, but the number of TikTok views doesn't lie. Winner of this year’s “Best TikTok Sleep Product (That’s Worth It)” in the Sleep Awards, the Baby Shusher is a portable sound machine that emits a real human shushing noise. Many parents credit it for getting them through the newborn phase, and said it gave them a break from constantly saying, “Shhh” to soothe their fussy babies.
While it has an impressive cult following, some parents do share that they can’t stand the noise. It really comes down to personal preference, but you might want to give it a listen before adding it to your cart.
“I’m obsessed with the baby shusher. Honestly it’s a very comforting noise, I kinda love it even for myself lol. We have 3 of them. For bedtime we use it along with the Hatch white or brown noise. It stays on for 30 or 15 minutes at a time. It puts my baby to sleep much faster than just white noise alone and is great for car naps (we also have the Hatch Go but I prefer the baby shusher).”
Frida Baby is a brand that What to Expect parents turn to for genius baby products that make life with a newborn a little bit easier. This two-in-one sound machine is just that, as it’s a super lightweight and compact device that you can take with you anywhere to help baby fall asleep. The strap wraps around the machine when not in use, and then can be detached to hook onto your stroller, diaper bag, or just about anywhere else. It’s also small but mighty, as it comes with five sound options, plus an adjustable light so it can double as a nightlight when you’re traveling.
“I just bought a second of the frida mom one. I honestly probably could have found a cheaper one but we have been using the same Frida mom sound machine since our first was born nearly two years ago and it’s never done us wrong so.”
The sleekness and simplicity of the Sleep Award-winning Hatch Rest Go has made it a top pick among WTE parents and editors alike. What to Expect's Commerce Content Director Liz Buxton (and mom of one!) takes it with her every time she leaves her house, and Blake Bakkila shares it’s quickly become a soothing staple for her son’s daily daytime naps at Grandma’s and while traveling.
It’s shockingly compact and lightweight, and has just three buttons: One to turn on the machine and change sounds, and two to adjust the volume. Parents also appreciate the attached ring for more relaxing strolls with baby, and as a bonus, it comes in five colorways.
“FTM. We got the Hatch Rest Go Portable and love it so far. Travels easily, good sound options, easy to use, good charge life. Would purchase again immediately if something happened to it."
“I just got my Hatch Rest Go in and I love the size, noise variety, and the simplicity! I got it for the bassinet, but also thought it could double for a stroller or walks. Excited to put it to use. We didn’t have any sort of sound machine last time and thought it would come in handy.”
Don’t let the adorable owl shape fool you — this sound machine means business when it comes to lulling your little one to sleep. It also ranks among our favorite night lights, since it can give a soft glow or project a starry night sky on your baby’s nursery wall or ceiling. These light settings can be used together or separately, and there are eight melodies and highly rated nature sounds to choose from.
Psst: if owls aren’t matching your nursery’s vibe, Skip Hop makes an elephant version, too.
“...when she transitioned to her own room she started using this Skip Hop owl nightlight and sound machine that projects a moon and stars. She LOVES it and wants it on every time she goes in her room (turns it on and off herself now.).”
“We have this owl night light. It has stars that can shine on the ceiling plus it’s body can light up at different levels. It also will play different Melodie’s or sounds. There is a timer option on the back that you can choose- I think it’s 15, 60 or all the time.”
“We used the skip hop owl and elephant (separately) and they were both awesome and lasted quite a few years.”
What To Look for in a Baby Sound Machine
Although you want a white noise machine to be capable of playing soothing sounds for baby, there are a lot of different features to consider before deciding what is best for you, including:
Type of sound: Most baby sound machines offer at least one of three types of noise: White noise, which consists of high frequency sounds such as television static or a fan; brown noise, which consists of low-frequency sounds like thunder; and pink noise, a medium-frequency option like rain falling. “[These] soothing sounds block out other background noises in the household that could be disruptive,” Dr. Kramer says. Any of these three options are gentle and calming for baby, but some babies (and parents) might prefer one over the other.
Adjustability: Parents appreciate being able to control the volume level and sound options, as well as color for sound machines that double as night lights. Some additional adjustable features to look for are timers and options to sync with an app.
Portability: If you want a sound machine you can use both in baby’s room and on-the-go, you’ll be glad to know that most baby noise machines are pretty small. There are some, however, that are more compact and better designed for travel. You should also consider whether the machine is a battery-operated, plug-in or charging model, as that may impact your ability to take it anywhere.

FAQs
What is the safest sound level for baby?
The AAP advises that sound machines for babies be set no louder than 50 decibels, which is about the equivalent to the sound of a refrigerator running. To be sure that you’re below the 50 decibel level, you can use a free app like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s NIOSH Sound Level Meter, which allows you to measure noise levels using your phone. Once he starts snoozing, however, the AAP advises that you turn off the sound machine, as there’s a small risk of hearing damage from the constant noise.
Do pediatricians recommend sound machines?
Because babies are used to constant background noise from being in the womb, pediatricians often recommend a baby sound machine to help mimic the same gentle sounds to help them fall asleep. Always make sure that you never attach a baby noise machine to their crib or put it in the crib with them. And, as mentioned, you shouldn't play the sound higher than 50 decibels, which is about the same level as an air conditioner.
Is it OK to use a sound machine for newborns?
Yes! In fact, many of these products are labeled as “infant sound machines” because they are particularly helpful for fussy newborns.
Where do I place a baby sound machine in the nursery?
According to the AAP, you should ensure your baby sound machine is at least seven feet away from your baby’s crib.
Is it OK to leave white noise on all night?
There isn't a definite amount of time that you should leave a baby sound machine on at night. However, many white noise machines come with timers, some of which are adjustable and some which are pre-set.
