Nara Organics is recalling all of its infant formula after it was linked to an outbreak of infant botulism.
So far, three babies in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington have become ill with botulism after consuming Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula. The infants were between 2 and 5 months old when they became sick in April and May of this year.
Thankfully, all three babies received treatment and are recovering. No deaths have been reported.
Which Nara Organics formula is being recalled?
Nara Organics has voluntarily recalled all lots of its formula after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended a recall.
The recalled formula was sold across the country at Target stores, Target.com and Nara.com.
What is infant botulism?
Infant botulism is a very rare but serious illness caused by toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. These toxins affect the nervous system and can make it difficult for babies to move, swallow, or breathe, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
The FDA recall says these spores are naturally found in the environment including in soil and dust and can find their way into factories and homes from hands, shoes, or other contaminated surfaces.
Early symptoms often include:
Constipation
Poor feeding
Weak sucking
Loss of head control
Trouble swallowing
Unusual weakness or "floppiness"
Drooping eyelids
Sluggish pupils
In severe cases, babies can develop breathing difficulties and may require hospitalization.
One important thing for parents to know is that symptoms may not appear right away. According to the AAP, symptoms of infant botulism typically appear within 3 to 30 days after exposure.
The FDA says you should call your pediatrician if your infant has consumed the recalled formula and experiences any of the above symptoms.
What should parents do?
