First Night in Botswana

Martin’s Drift Border Crossing – Limpopo River

There is something festive about the first night in a new country. Dani & Marius had stayed at this Kwa Nokeng previously, but it was our first time. What a perfect place! The Limpopo River is long and establishes part of the border between South Africa and Botswana. It also flows into the Kruger National Park in South Africa much further east.

When we checked in, we learned that they offered a boat ride. John & I immediately jumped on it! We originally had about an hour to prepare, but then they told us it was time to go! So, we grabbed our cameras and went for what turned out to be a private boat ride.

Boat ride in Botswana

The first thing we saw from the first boat ride in Botswana was the bridge we crossed from the border post into Botswana. So pretty!

The bird life was great! We really enjoyed to guide and he us. We love birds and he was a keen spotter. Les, the captain, told us that there was a resident Malachite Kingfisher! This was the number 1 bird on Cheri’s list! We decided to see if it was OK with Dani and Marius for us to book another early morning trip to see if we could find the tiny bird!

First Failures

When we got back to the house, we learned that the batteries were not properly charging the fridges or freezer. Yikes – this was a massive issue. There are NO supplies in the bush – no fuel, no food, no water! You must bring it all and if the fridge or freezer aren’t working then your trip is in jeopardy. Clearly we needed to resolve this and luckily we were on the way up so there were towns where we might find help.

We did go on the early morning boat ride, still no Malachite, but Les was able to get us connected to a guy in Palapye who might be able to help with the voltage issues. We packed up and headed out for the 1 hour drive to see if we could find the guy.
