In the heart of Central America lies a birdwatcher’s paradise, where vibrant plumage and melodious calls adorn the tropical landscapes. Costa Rica boasts an astounding diversity of bird species, drawing enthusiasts from across the globe to witness its breathtaking avian spectacle. From the delicate hummingbirds to the majestic toucans and the mesmerizing mot mots, the country is a haven for an array of colorful and captivating birds.  After two trips experiencing the incredible diversity, we are poised for many more!

Hummingbirds: Jewels of the Air

The enchanting hummingbirds, with their iridescent feathers and rapid wingbeats, are among the most iconic and beloved birds in Costa Rica. With over 50 species fluttering through the country’s varied habitats, these tiny marvels bring flashes of color to gardens and rainforests.

Any garden is a hotspot for these feisty creatures.  We especially enjoyed the Savegre Valley and places near Manual Antonio finding them to be ideal spots to witness these miniature wonders darting from flower to flower, their iridescent plumage catching the sunlight as they feed on nectar.

Mot Mots: Nature’s Artists

Adorned with stunning plumage and distinctive tail feathers, mot mots are renowned for their unique appearance and behavior. These secretive birds inhabit the dense forests and are often identified by their characteristic “whoop-whoop” calls.

A boat cruise in Sarapiqui is a great way to get a glimpse of these elusive creatures perched regally on a branch, their vibrant colors adding an artistic touch to the verdant surroundings.

Toucans: Iconic and Majestic

Toucans, with their oversized, colorful bills and striking appearance, are some of the most easily recognizable birds in Costa Rica. The keel-billed toucan, known for its vibrant beak, and the fiery-billed aracari , the emerald toucanets, collared acari, and the black-mandibled toucans are among the species that captivate onlookers with their charisma.

Being in the canopy provides the best opportunities to spot these majestic birds, their calls echoing through the canopy as they gracefully move from tree to tree. Finding an Airbnb may provide you the most extraordinary experience.

Other Colorful Birds: A Kaleidoscope of Beauty

Beyond the hummingbirds, mot mots, and toucans, Costa Rica hosts an array of other colorful birds. The green parrots, with its sky blue cap and red nose, captures the imagination of bird enthusiasts, while the endangered scarlet and green macaws paint the skies with their vibrant reds/blues and greens, and so many other birds will delight you.

The La Selva Biological Station and the Tarcoles River are additional hotspots where birdwatchers can marvel at the diversity of Costa Rica’s avian population, encountering an assortment of winged wonders.
